PEI athletes win 4 AA Gold and 2 team gold at Atlantics

Team PEI gymnasts competed April 24-25 in Saint John, NB at the 2015 Atlantic Gymnastics Championships claiming a multitude of individual and event medals, four Atlantic all-around titles, and two team gold medals. The annual competition features close to 300 of the top gymnasts from the region.

Sophie Mayne once again led the Argo 6 team to a team gold medal, while claiming the individual all-around gold and three event gold medals. Teammates Liah Mah and Ella MacDougall placed 7th and 8th overall. In Open 6, Tori Hogan was the Atlantic all-around champion and Hannah Williams was 7th overall. Grace Potter took the silver all-around in Tyro 6 and Ida Christensen was 5th. In Novice 6, Sarah White was the top PEI competitor with a fourth place finish in the all-around. Hayden Chaisson took fifth place in the same category.

In Argo 5, Charlotte Thompson was the all-around bronze medalist. Kenzie Myers took silver overall in CPN Elite and was first on floor. Teammate Chloe Cudmore was 6th all-around in CPN Aspire. Lindsey Smith took fifth place in Argo 7 and was Atlantic champion on vault and floor. Emma Christensen claimed 7th spot in Novice 7 and Sydney Sear was 7th in Open 7.

In Tyro 8, Jenaya Ross was the top competitor with a fourth place finish overall. Teammates Seven McHatten and Reese Kelly placed 6th and 7th. Madison Kelly-Maund led the Novice 8 team with a 5th all-around finish. Kelly-Maund also took gold on floor exercise.   Teammates Alexa McClure and Bria Gallant were 6th and 8th all-around.

In Open 8 Dara MacInnis finished 7th all-around and Paige Mills was 8th. Karisa Quinn was first in the National Novice category.

“The girls’ team performed really well. It was a high calibre meet and we were pleased with our results. ” says Team PEI coach Shelley Ferguson.

On the men’s side, in Level 1 under 12 Jack Warren placed 4th all-around, Jago Sabine was 5th, , and Gabriel Ing finished 8th. Sabine was also the Atlantic champion on high bar. In Level 1 over 12, Cameron Davis was 5th overall and took the gold medal on vault. Ethan Arsenault took the overall bronze in Level 2 under 10 and was Atlantic champion on pommel horse.

The Level 3 under 13 team won team gold with Baylen Jupp leading the team with a bronze all-around medal. Teammates Trent McClure and Murphy MacArthur placed 7th and 8th. MacArthur also claimed the gold medal on high bar. In Level 3 over 13, Simon Burns placed 4th all-around. In Level 4 under 13, Isaac Bourque was Atlantic all-around champion also winning four event gold medals. Tanner Clow claimed the bronze all-around, Nicholas Handrahan was 4th and Jesse Robertson was 5th. Handrahan also took the gold medal on floor exercise.

“The PEI boys were on the podium throughout the competition. We had a strong team this year.” adds Team PEI judge Jeff MacRae.

Atlantic Gymnastics Championships
